In computing, to boot a system is to turn the device or machine on and load the operating system into random access memory. The boot-up process is made up of different stages, depending on the setup of the system and the operating system that has to be loaded. For most cases, these stages are important:

  • The BIOS or UEFI are powered up and run the Power-On Self Test (POST).
  • The bootloader loads the operating system.
  • Once all the operating systems files have been loaded, control is given to the OS.
